STANDING UNDER THE SKY
Oh it was all such a long time ago come back around again
And every song along the way shouted out as if we knew
the notes, the lyrics, and what would happen with our lives
Even the old folks said they saw the end before it was in sight
It was a glorious morning that turned into a wonderful night
Anyone looking to sum it all up in a couple of words
misses the point of silence, fails at the art of listening
You can say you want to follow each and every rule
Then you go and break the law just by being you
Forgive those who didn’t forgive you, just step away
It’s still warm for a night in early December
Funny what we forget, sad what we remember
Count the years and add up all those grand times
‘cause this is it. Better make room for whoever is next
Blessed by his life on Long Island, Graham Everett has moved south, from Earlysville, VA to Durham, NC. “Standing Under the Sky” is one of the poems in Epi-Genetic Sonnets, arriving, one can hope, in 2023.
