SEARCHING FOR ROBERT

robert i waited by the old stone wall.
remember how we would
talk over it as we replaced
each fallen rock every spring?
but you never came.

i waited by the fork in the road
but as it began getting dark
i took the easy one home
though i knew you’d disapprove.

and then on one winter night
i stood in the swirling snow
and listened for the bells
on your horse drawn sleigh
but heard not a sound
except wind in the trees.
so, I made my way home
to warm my hands and feet
by the fireplace.

then i picked up the book
i keep next to my chair
“collected works of robert frost”
and there you were with me
as you always are,
my old, true friend.
